Those of you who are like me, who are adults, are feeling the heat. But we are much more tolerant, able to control our body temperature, than the old, the very young, the weak, the infirm and especially our pets.

Unlike us, pets like dogs and cats cannot sweat. They will pant, evaporate saliva from their tongues but that is not nearly as effective as full body sweating.

It’s up to us as responsible pet owners to ensure that our pets are kept cool. Keep them indoors during the hottest times of the day. Make sure there are shady spots for them in our backyards. Don’t walk them when it’s too hot. Most importantly, make sure they have enough water to drink, it is even more important for them than for us.

One of the things you can do is to purchase a device which has a large reservoir of water and automatically keeps their bowls full for longer. This is especially important in the hotter months and if you do not have air conditioning. Also, it’s very important when it’s hot to take water along for your dog. They will appreciate it and it will help them stave off heat related issues. It doesn’t take long for them to overheat.
