How to get tastier tap water
Martha writes:
I live in New Hampshire. I know tap water is safe and all that but I just don’t like the taste! I don’t want to spend a lot of money or any at all if possible. I just like having glasses of water so is there anything I can do to get it to taste better?
Hi Martha
Sometimes poor taste/odor can be caused by the residual disinfectant left in your drinking water to keep it pathogen free on its way to you through the water mains. Often, simply keeping an open jug in the refrigerator will improve the taste. This is because over time the chlorine, when exposed to air, will work its way out of the water.
There are other things in the water that may contribute to poor taste. Harmless organic compounds, and sometimes algae depending on the time of the year and what your water source is. One of the best ways to remove foul tastes from tap water is to run it through an activated carbon filter.
For your needs of a few glasses of water a day, a pitcher type filter would likely be the easiest and most inexpensive way of improving the taste. I have compared two popular brands, Brita Vs. PUR. You can read that article by clicking here: Brita Jug vs. PUR Jug.
I hope that helps.

Comparison: Brita Jug vs. PUR Jug
It’s no secret that the home water treatment market is saturated. There are many good products on the market and what you purchase depends on what your needs are. You should ask yourself:
- Am I treating tap water or raw well/lake water?
- Do I need a treatment device for my tap water?
- What do I need the treatment device to remove?
- How much water do I need?
Today, we are comparing a Brita Jug filter vs. a PUR jug filter. The uses of these filters are only for municipally treated tap water. The volume is for a household of perhaps 2-3 people who like a glass or two of water per day. The units are both intended to do the same job and look very similar:
I’ve made a small table to compare the two, as follows:
| Brita 42412 Atlantis Water Pitcher | PUR CR-6000 2 Stage Oval Water Pitcher | |
| Water Volume | Approx. 0.375 gallon | Approx.0.5 gallon |
| Est. Filter Life | 2 months | 2 months |
| Est. Filter Volume | 40 gallons | 40 gallons |
| Contaminants Reduced |

| Special Programs | None | Portion of purchase helps bring safe drinking water to 3rd world countries |
| Cost of Unit* | $22.99 | $14.49 |

As you can see from above, both units are equal in performance and both will do the job they are intended for, and that is to remove taste and odors from municipal tap water. I think the criteria to purchase either should be if you find your municipally treated tap waters taste or odor objectionable and have 2-3 people who drink a few glasses of cold water per day (each unit will give you 6-7 glasses of water per load). My personal preference would be to purchase the PUR unit. This unit holds a bit more water, is slightly less expensive and they give a portion of each purchase to a charity that provides clean drinking water in Africa.
