Drinking Foreign Tap Water Safe?

I’m in China and I’ve been drinking bottled water lately, but I’m running out. I’m thinking of drinking the filtered tap water there. Can someone please tell me if this is safe or will I run to the restroom every time? Please and thank you.

I can tell you that North American municipally supplied water is safe due to adherence to AWWA and 10 state standards – standards for treatment and testing.
Anywhere else you’re taking risks.
You should disinfect your water to ensure that any bacteria are dead so you don’t end up with the scoots or worse. I use chlorine dioxide tabs when I go backpacking, I used them on raw water right from the lake and I’ve never gotten sick. I use the Katadyn tabs, I linked to them below. They are inexpensive if you want to try them.

If you boil tap water, does that take the fluoride out of it? I’m sure almost everyone knows that fluoride isn’t the best for you, among other things, and I don’t feel comfortable drinking it. I don’t want to buy a new jug of water every time I feel like making tea or something though.

Boiling water will actually concentrate the fluoride, because when boiling water steam escapes that is pure water leaving a higher concentration of fluoride behind.
You can purchase a water distiller or reverse osmosis filter that will remove the fluoride. Both are around $300, so you need to do a calculation to see how long of not buying bottled water will pay back the purchase. After that, it’s all money in your pocket.
For example, if you spend $20 a week on bottled water, buying a $300 distillation unit will pay for itself in 15 weeks.
